The first Heart Children Summer camp took place in Delphi Resort in Connemara at the end of August. It was a wonderful weekend and a resounding success with 100% of the young people having discussed their CHD with others at the camp. This was done informally amongst the group, none of whom had ever met one another before. One message from a parent reported: “It was a big thing for him to go somewhere he is not familiar with and with strangers. He was all questions about his heart condition on the way home which is great because he never wanted to know what was wrong with him & hated talking about it. So he has really benefited from being with people with the similar condition as himself”.
Everyone said they would be coming back next year. Huge thanks to the wonderful volunteers who made it possible this year. To our medical team, Doctors, Lizeri Jansen and Gideon Meyer, Nurse (and mum to Logan), Louise Mulle-Kelly, and to Mick Teehan, adult with CHD, for literally getting stuck in to all the activities and being a fantastic role model for the young people. The camp was made possible through grants received from the National Lottery Community Fund in Mayo and The Hospital Saturday Fund.
