Types of CHD
Congenital heart disease is a term which covers any heart abnormality present from birth. In Ireland, one in every 100 babies ( representing 500-600 children p.a.) is born with a heart condition. Acquired heart disease is a term which covers a heart abnormality that develops after a baby is born.
Each child born with, or whom acquires CHD, will have a completely unique presentation of the condition. And many children may have multiple forms of CHD. However, the good news is that continual improvements in paediatric cardiac surgery and clinical care have led to many more children with heart conditions surviving into adulthood.
There are over forty different types of CHD. The following list of pdfs covers some of the most common conditions.

Preparing your child to start school is stressful for all parents. But when your child has a serious health condition that requires close observation of symptoms, it is vitally important that the teaching staff in your child’s school/creche have a detailed understanding of your child’s illness; how it can affect their physical and/or mental ability and how to respond in the case of an emergency.
Heart Children has developed the Individual Healthcare Plan to help you establish a greater understanding of your child’s condition for the teaching staff and assistants to support a safe learning experience.
We have also developed a leaflet for your child’s teacher to explain what CHD is and give more information on the condition and how it may affect your child in the educational setting.
The parent letter can be used to provide GDPR consent to your child’s school/creche for them to hold your child’s medical information on school files.
